MP System GmbH takes over the Metabo site in Meppen

Nürtingen, May 2010. Metabo has found a buyer for the Meppen site that is able to offer the site a long-term future. As agreed contractually on Wednesday 26 May 2010, the MP System GmbH (a company of the Purkart Group from Grossrückerswalde in the Ore Mountains) will take over the production site on 1st July 2010. Secrecy has been agreed with regard to the purchase price. Within the framework of a re-orientation process, Metabo announced in 2009 that they intended to stop production in Meppen by the middle of 2011. "It was strategically important to concentrate on the Nürtingen and Shanghai production sites but we felt a continued obligation to our staff in Emsland. Thus, we attempted to find a partner that would be able to make use of the knowledge and expertise of the staff and the excellent facilities housed at the site." says Horst W. Garbrecht, CEO of Metabo AG.

Purkart currently intends to take on half of the existing 130 employees and the Meppen site promises to enhance the existing range. The com-pany specialises in the efficient processing and refinement of metals. The strength of the company lies within the manufacturing of entire modules for the automobile and construction industries and the ventila-tion, printing, fine mechanics and hospital equipment sectors. Since the foundation of the company in 1995, Purkart has grown to its current size of 190 employees and had a turnover of 16 million euros in 2009. "Meppen offers us ideal conditions with which to expand further into our core business, metal processing. The experience and competence of the specialist employees and the modern facilities have convinced us to go ahead" says Mike Purkart, CEO of MP SystemGmbH.

In addition, the Saxony-based company has purchased the licence for the "Elektra Beckum" brand which is traditionally linked to the site. Un-der this name, Purkart will continue to produce the welding units, log splitters and log saws that Metabo removed from their range at the be-ginning of the year. "We envisage using the brand to break into new and growing industrial sectors such as the solar industry" says Mike Purkart. The contractual agreement does, however, exclude the produc-tion of products that may clash with the Metabo range. A further string to Purkart's bow is the supply of parts to Metabo. The Nürtingen-based power tool manufacturer is currently re-locating their semi-stationary wood processing machines from Meppen to Nürtingen, but will still con-tinue to obtain metal parts from the factory in Meppen. The product range of Metabo will be unaffected by this sale.

The fact that the new owner was able to keep as many of the endan-gered jobs open as possible, was a particularly important factor when it came to the search for a suitable partner, emphasises Horst Garbrecht. Purkart wants to take on the employees under the same financial condi-tions set out in the current contracts with Metabo. However, it is planned to extend the working hours to 40 hours a week. "The work-force is fundamentally prepared to make compromises, if it secures the long-term future of the site," says Joachim Roskoschinski, chairman of the works council at Metabo in Meppen. "We are sure that putting the site into the hands of Purkart is a good move and will ensure it a secure future. Negotiations were positive from the start," says Markus Sauer-mann, who as head of Production Monitoring, handled the sales proc-ess at Metabo.
