Metabo revitalisedNürtingen, May 2010. Metabo grows considerably in the first quarter of 2010. After the Nürtingen-based manufacturers of power tools experienced a reduction in turnover of around 15 percent to 312 million euros in the 2009 crisis year, the figures for the first quarter of 2010 are showing a clear upward trend. The turnover increased by 14 percent when compared to the same period in the previous year. "This shows that our situation has developed considerably better than the world market in 2009 and, in particular, in the first three months of 2010. We can take this as first proof that the re-orientation of the company and brand is working", explains Horst W. Garbrecht, CEO of the traditional company. For the year 2010 as a whole, he expects a continued sustainable growth in turnover. "Whether the noticeable upwards trend of the first quarter will continue at this high level is dependant on worldwide economic developments in the construction sector and processing industries", continues Garbrecht. With this background in mind, we are expecting the 2010 business year to continue in a "cautious and rather conservative manner with growth in the single figure region".Using the 2009 crisis year to implement a strategic re-orientation 2009 was "a year in which we proofed our structures and adapted them for the future", says Garbrecht. The number of employees was reduced by around 400 to the current worldwide figure of approximately 2,000, of these, some 1,100 work at the headquarters in Nürtingen. In future, Metabo wishes to make increased use of the opportunities and chances afforded by a medium-sized family company. "The typical strengths of a medium-sized company, such as manoeuvrability, flexibility and short decision-making paths help us to react quickly and with application orientation to the wishes and needs of our customers," emphasises the CEO. The most important topic as far as the market is concerned is the strategic re-orientation of the company which has one significant characteristic: Concentration. "We are concentrating on solving the problems faced by professionals in trade and industry and, in particular, for two of our core target groups: Metal and, Construction and Renovation. A third important sector is Outdoors and Garden." In future, the performance capabilities of modern Lithium-Ion batteries will play a major role. "Battery and motor technologies are two core strengths of Metabo", according to Garbrecht. The company will use them to win over sectors for battery-powered units which have, until now, been the domain of mains powered units. "Battery power tools are the topic of the future." Metabo is concentrating fully on mobile uses. Extremely modern range of products According to his words, when developing new products, consistent user orientation combined with shorter development times are of prime importance. Garbrecht: "Our developers are constantly out and about on construction sites, visiting dealers, and listening to exactly what our customers want." The result is a whole new range of products for professional users. In 2009, Metabo already started to introduce a new generation of new battery and mains powered units along with innovative additions to the accessories range. In 2010 the innovation drive has and will continue to be furthered. "With our innovation drive, we are achieving two things: Firstly, we have an extremely modern, market-oriented range and this 2010 innovation drive will see us making around 45 percent of our turnover with products that have been on the market for less than three years. Secondly, the new products include an entire range of units which underline our competence for the two core target groups, Metal and Construction trade", explains the CEO. This strategic orientation has been expressly supported and carried by the board of the family-owned company, says financial director Andreas Georgiadis. "The shareholders have topped up the capital resources and thus consciously invested in the new strategy of the company. This means that we have a solid financial basis on which to build in order to ensure that Metabo continues to be successful."
