The rake angle influences the quality of the cut, feed and required cutting power. It always correlates to the desired entry and exit angles to the work surface.
The size of the front rake angle depends on:

If the clearance angle is too low, chip removal by the next tooth is not possible. Large clearance angles facilitate large chip removals. This is necessary for fast feed rates. Small clearance angles allow only minor chip removal, give smoother cuts and require slower feed rates.
In most cases (primarily with circular saws) the exit angle is unfavourable in contrast to the entry angle. For this reason the „good side“ should be placed so it is opposite to that of the saw blade exit side.
